Richards Bay beach zone is not open for exercise under Level 4

Error led to unauthorised opening of Alkantstrand to the public

JOGGERS and cyclists who flocked to the Alkantstrand beach area on Friday and Saturday, taking blissful advantage of the Level 4 reprieve, should not have been allowed access and will in future have to give the scenic zone a miss.

That was the late morning word on Saturday from City of uMhlathuze chief sport and recreation officer, Shakes Hiraman.

‘The security personnel at the boom gate to the Alkantstrand area were wrongly informed that they could allow people to enter and this has now been rectified,’ said Hiraman, who apart from his lifesaving and swimming duties, is himself an avid runner and triathlete.

‘While it is a very popular place for exercise and recreation, the beach zone is most definitely out of bounds.’

This after scores of locals were seen walking or running onto the piers – some pushing prams or accompanied by their dogs.

Many might not have been within a 5km radius of their homes.
