District to implement smart metering

Water meters for Zululand

A MEASURE to increase the uThungulu District Municipality revenue base and reduce grant funding reliance and efforts to increase water revenue by the metering of households, is in the pipeline.

This was the sentiment of uThungulu District Mayor Thembeka Mchunu as she presented the adjustment budget summary last week at a council meeting.

Council approved the upward adjustment revenue of more than R15,1 million rand resulting in an adjusted budget of R944, 361, 789 for the 2013/2014 financial year.

Mchunu said the municipality was concentrating all efforts to increase revenue through installation of smart water metering systems.

She noted with concern the expenditure on water tankers, but was pleased that plans to expand the footprint through the regional bulk scheme, Greater Mthonjajeni, were progressing well.

‘We also hope to officially launch the Middledrift water purification plant at Nkandla and plans are in the pipeline to develop other municipal areas like Mfolozi and Ntambanana through our service delivery efforts in the remainder of this financial year.’

Still celebrating their clean status audit status received in December, Mchunu said it was time to the hit the ground to ensure all funds are effectively and timeously spent before the end of this financial year and to maintain the district’s clean audit status.
