Santaco gears up for massive fund-raising drive
Santaco hopes to raise about R3-billion to compensate affected parties within the industry during the national national lockdown

THE South Africa National Taxi Council (Santaco) hopes to raise about R3-billion to compensate affected parties within the industry during the national national lockdown.
This was revealed by Santaco KZN Secretary, Patros Manqele, at the Empangeni Rank on Wednesday morning.

‘Our business has been seriously affected, especially those who work on the long distance routes. We are also required to have only ferry 10 or fewer passengers per trip and it obviously affects income.
‘We have to raise money to assist the large number of those affected. Government and private companies will be approached to contribute towards the fund.
Manqele also handed over hygiene packs to leaders of the various taxi associations in the King Cetshwayo, Ilembe, uMkhanyakude and Mthonjaneni regions.
This was made possible by a R1-million contribution by SA Taxi to curb the spread of the virus within the taxi industry.

Packs included masks, sanitisers, educational pamphlets as well as protective gear for those responsible for sanitising ranks and taxis.
Manqele also told the taxi bosses to ensure their drivers comply with all lockdown regulations and safety rules.
‘Each taxi must have its own sanitiser on board and the driver is also required to use it every time after collecting money from commuters,’ he said.
