Traditional leaders adopt new strategies to curb virus spread

They have suspended mass community meetings and wedding ceremonies to ensure that the spread of Covid-19 is contained

TRADITIONAL leaders have adopted a new strategy to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in their respective areas.

They have suspended mass community meetings and wedding ceremonies to ensure that the spread of Covid-19 is contained.

Inkosi Phiwayinkosi Biyela of the uBuka Tribal Authority, said even though mass gatherings have been suspended, it excludes funerals.

‘We have changed our approached regarding funerals to ensure that only few people attend. The usual mass night vigils a day before a funeral are also discouraged

‘Since the lockdown we changed the times of funerals, which must now be conducted in the early morning to ensure everything is completed by 7am,’ said Biyela.

‘Bereaved families are working hand in hand with the Izinduna to ensure that the community, especially those who assist in digging the grave, adhere to social distancing and sanitise themselves while preparing the grave.

‘Izinduna are also responsible for ensuring that the number of people at funerals do not exceed 50 people,’ Biyela said.

He expressed his concern about those people who refuse to obey the lockdown regulations.

‘These people roam the area looking for alcohol and cigarettes, even though they know that those items have been removed from the shelves.

‘Everybody is aware that the sale of alcohol and tobacco is currently prohibited, but these people refuse to stay at home.

‘We know this is hard to do, but we have to do it for the sake of curbing the spread. People must know that this will change and everything will eventually return to normal.’
