Police warn against medical supplies scammers
Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson, Captain Debbie Ferreira, urged community members and businesses to be aware of fraudsters attempting to cash in on false advertisements for medical supplies and equipment
RICHARDS Bay police are calling on the public to be cautious when purchasing large quantities of personal protective equipment (PPE), hand sanitisers and other medical supplies as con artists attempt to prey on the health sector’s needs owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson, Captain Debbie Ferreira, urged community members and businesses to be aware of fraudsters attempting to cash in on false advertisements for medical supplies and equipment.
‘Buyers must ensure they are dealing with legitimate suppliers, and if possible, refrain from paying large deposits
Community worker, Rhana Naicker, said she is aware of several cases where local businesses were approached by such con artists, but thankfully no money was lost as transactions were cancelled in time.
‘Any company or individuals who claim to have volumes of PPE in stock, should first produce their company’s registration details and then their certified credentials as suppliers of PPE as part of essential goods and services.
‘The fraudsters claim to have large quantities of stock in their possession and attempt to solicit huge amounts as deposits before delivery takes place,’ Naicker said.
