Destitute Mandlazini families receive food parcels

THIRTY needy families in Mandlazini received food parcels at the weekend to help them cope with the extended national lockdown until the end of the month.

The food parcels were donated by Phoenix Cash & Carry and Zanele Mjadu of Khazimula Caterers.

One of the beneficiaries, gogo Alice Sibisi, expressed much gratitude upon receiving her donation, which she said came at a crucial time to help her feed her family during this difficult period.

She said although the lockdown had not disrupted her daily routine, the biggest upset for her was not being able to attend church services on Sundays.

‘Now I spend most of my time indoors and come out to clean the yard to keep busy,’ she said.

Ward 4 councillor, Lucky Zondo, called for more support to assist the many other destitute families in the area.

‘The lockdown has had a serious impact on people’s livelihoods as many within the community rely on informal trading to earn a living, while many others depend on social grants.

‘As a result of everyone having to stay at home, food supplies become too little to sustain families for an extended period.

‘While we are extremely grateful for the support we have received thus far, we continue to appeal to others to extend a helping hand during this difficult time,’ Zondo said.

He further urged community members to continue to adhere to the lockdown regulations to help curb the spread of the coronavirus.
