Good Samaritan’s campaign assists needy students and families
Through his social media campaign called the #GivingOutChallenge, radio presenter Simthande Myeza has been sharing the little money he has with those who need it the most
AS many people rally to feed the needy during the Covid-19 lockdown, one Good Samaritan is digging deep into his own pockets to provide data to students and electricity tokens to families.
Through his social media campaign called the #GivingOutChallenge, radio presenter Simthande Myeza (23) of Kranskop has been sharing the little money he has with those who need it the most.
‘I started a Facebook page asking people who need help to write to me via direct message and explain their situation, whether they need data or electricity and based on that information, I would help them.
‘I provide free airtime and data to students who must complete their assignments and other schoolwork online during this period.
‘I then offered to help buy electricity for families who are in desperate need.
‘The little I give to people comes out of my own pocket and I am not expecting any repayment,’ Simthande said.
With an overwhelming response to his campaign, Simthande has decided to challenge others to assist.
‘I initially told myself that I would choose only five families and five students each week, but I began exceeding my target because I received so many responses from people wanting assistance,’ he said.
‘I don’t even have that much for myself and my family, but giving out a R100 or R200 voucher here and there will not hurt.
‘I still believe in a South Africa that hasn’t lost its spirit of ubuntu, goodwill and sharing.
‘Now is the time more than ever to be kind to each other and share the little that we have,’ he said.
