Lockdown influences internet search changes

How South African online search interests have shifted because of isolation

With South Africans forced to stay at home during the shutdown, people’s lifestyles and hobbies have been altered.

Picodi.com’s analysis team investigated Google search queries and created a ranking of the activities most popular in these times.

Unable to leave the house, South Africans’ interests in activities such as concerts, the theatre and cinema have become less popular, with internet searches of these activities decreasing by 79%, 67% and 58% respectively.

To top this, South Africans have also lost interest in photography, dancing and home renovations.

On the flip side, the biggest increase of interest was board games (245%), home gym (223%) and online courses (194%).

The team found that the uncertain situation in the labour market has made internet users seek opportunities to gain additional qualifications.

Other creative activities and crafts, such as crocheting (88%) and drawing (28%) have also gained popularity.

Among activities which increased by a relatively slow margin are listening to podcasts and painting (5% and 4% respectively).
