KZN MEC for Transport, Bheki Ntuli, said major roadblocks would be ongoing throughout the lockdown period
JUST a week into lockdown and more than 1 400 people have been arrested across the province for failing to adhere to regulations.
Various raids and roadblocks held during the course of the week resulted in the arrest of 1 443 people who flouted the law.
Speaking on Thursday at a roadblock on the R102 in KwaDukuza, KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Bheki Ntuli, said major roadblocks throughout the lockdown period would target various categories of crime, including overloading and failure to adhere to lockdown regulations.
Thirty-three arrests were made in KwaDukuza alone, of which 10 were liquor-related, 14 were for not adhering to social distancing regulations and a further nine arrests related to public transport operators failing to adhere to the maximum loading capacity.

‘I wish to commend our law enforcement agencies for demonstrating that we are serious about clamping down on those who contravene the regulations,’ said Ntuli.
‘We will continue to enforce the regulations to ensure the safety of our people and to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
‘Our law enforcement agencies are implementing a zero tolerance policy against the contravention of the lockdown regulations.
‘Police will continue to conduct multi-disciplinary law enforcement operations, road safety awareness campaigns and education drives about the coronavirus in the province.’
