Zululand hospital appeals for protective gear
The coronavirus outbreak will stretch the hospital's resources to the limit
IN the midst of the Covid-19 health crisis, government healthcare facilities find themselves under-resourced and in dire need of protective gear for frontline staff.
Serving three districts – King Cetshwayo, uMkhanyakude and Zululand – with a catchment of 2.6 million people, Queen Nandi Regional Hospital’s resources are being stretched to the limit.
The 422-bed hospital’s services include tertiary level neonatal, adult and paediatric intensive care units, as well as specialised obstetric and gynaecology, paediatric and neonatal services.

The hospital’s human resources, medical equipment, protective gear and linked services will all be placed under much pressure during this time.
The dire shortage of critical medical supplies will impact negatively on all frontline healthcare workers and patients, which will have long-term effects on the community at large.
The hospital is in desperate need of:
Visors/face shields: 100-500
Disposable gowns, shirts, pants — any material: 100
Disposable hoods: 100
Disposable theatre caps: 100-500
N95 masks, any type: 100-1 000
Surgical masks: 100-1 000
Any alcohol-based disinfectant/hand sanitiser: 500-1 000 bottles (500ml, 200ml, etc)
Hibiscrub – liquid-based antiseptic soap: 500-1 000 bottles (any size)
Gloves – any type: 500-1 000
Boot covers- plastic, any material: 100-500
PVC boots: 100
Aprons – disposable: 500 – 1 000
Any type of protective suit: 100-200
Disposable sheets/drapes: 100-500
Disposable underwear: 100-500
Blue/yellow disposable kitchen towel, non-woven: 100 rolls
Linen savers – all sizes: 100-500
