Prioritising water safety in rural areas
The aim of the programme is to curb the number of drownings across the province
Kwazulu-Natal leads the way in drowning statistics.
To combat this, and to educate communities on water safety, KZN Department of Sport and Recreation MEC, Hlengiwe Mavimbela, recently launched a water safety programme in St Lucia.
The department’s Youth Whizz Ambassador programme was also unveiled on the day.
The aim of the programme is to curb the number of drownings across the province and it is the mandate of youth ambassadors to educate communities on how to stay safe in the water.
Similar programmes will be replicated in rural areas.
A short demonstration was given on how to use pool ‘noodles’ and the NSRI pink rescue buoys, and advice was given on testing the depth of rivers to ensure the water is shallow enough for safe swimming.
