‘Critical challenges’ at Ngwelezana Hospital acknowledged by Department of Health

AFTER reports of numerous operational issues at Ngwelezana Hospital were recently brought to light, the Department of Health responded, acknowledging that the hospital is experiencing a number of critical challenges.

Responding to the claims, spokesperson for the Department of Health, Noluthando Nkosi admitted that medical products had to be obtained from neighbouring facilities owing to shortages.

Nkosi said that challenges experienced by the supplier have resulted in a shortage of certain highly specialised and therefore scarce medical products.
She also highlighted that hospital staff must follow specific procedures in reporting shortages of supplies.
In some cases this had not been done which means the institution cannot engage with service providers.
