Grave vandalism is appalling

The headstones of nine graves have been completely broken off

THE historical Norwegian cemetery at KwaMondi, outside Eshowe, has again been vandalised.

A fed up Stan Larkan has registered a criminal case of malicious damage to property.

Larkan has spent much of his personal time, effort and funds to ensure this site of significance is maintained for future generations and the many tourists that frequent eShowe.

The cemetery was in a derelict state some 15 years ago when he, as mayor, repaired the damage and restored the cemetery.

Larkan said, ‘I am really angry and appalled to have witnessed this act of vandalism and hope the police will track down these destructive culprits who should be severely dealt with.

‘The repulsive language and even drawing Mandela into the matter is objectionable and, to say the least, these culprits are scandalous hooligans’, said Larkan.

The headstones of nine graves have been completely broken off, one of which was thrown over the precast fence into an open area.

Graffiti slogans have been painted on 20 graves.

Among the racist slogans painted are, ‘Go Home Mandela is dead’ and ‘Abalungu batatha izwe lethu’ which when translated means, ‘The Whites are taking our land’.

It is thought the damage was done between 5 December and 20 January.

Ironically, the graves of the highly respected Rev Shobede and his wife were among those desecrated.

  1. That’s totally disgusting, they have no respect for the dead. Is this what Mandela taught them!
