MEC calls for arrest of violent University of Zululand protesters

MEC Ntuli said the targeting of police is unacceptable

CALLING for calm amid the latest round of University of Zululand (Unizulu) protests, KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison this morning (Tuesday) urged university management to work with law enforcement and to protect non-protesting students.

Ntuli condemned the unlawful burning of a police vehicle yesterday and said the situation is being closely monitored to prevent further damage to property.

‘It is totally unacceptable that a police vehicle would be torched when police are there to ensure that innocent people are protected and property is safeguarded against vandalism,’ said Ntuli.

‘The police must move swiftly and arrest all the perpetrators responsible for damage to property and acts of violence.’

He said violence is not a solution and he expected students at institutions of higher learning to engage constructively in resolving issues.
