Mkuze and Obonjeni residents protest against hospital accusing them of nepotism

They blocked roads with burning tyres and rocks, preventing anyone from going near the public hospital

MKUZE and Obonjeni residents blockaded all roads leading to and the gate of a public hospital, accusing Bethesda Hospital management of nepotism on Monday.

They blocked roads with burning tyres and rocks, preventing anyone from going near the public hospital.

They claim that last week they submitted their memorandum of grievances to the hospital management, but until now they have never heard anything from them.

One of the protestors, Bongani Dludla, claimed that there were many locals who have applied for jobs at the hospital, but only those related to hospital management are hired.

‘Recently, the hospital advertised a position for a code 10 driver, but at a later stage they changed and said they need only code 14, to accommodate their relative. When we came here for an interview for that position, the person that was hired told us directly that we were wasting our time, because the position was created for him, and indeed, he was hired. They do this knowing exactly that they are abusing their powers.

‘In all advertised positions in this hospital only people related to them are hired; we demand answers now or they must redo their appointments,’ said Dludla.

KZN Department of Health spokesperson, Sibongiseni Mkhize, said that they are aware of the protest and they are waiting for their district office to send them a full report.

‘Once we have received a full report of what is happening there we will be able to respond to their allegations,’ Mkhize said.

uMkhanyakude cluster police spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said that their members worked hard to disperse the angry crowd of protesters and they are monitoring the situation.
