Increase in copper pipe theft

Four incidents of copper theft have been reported within a week - two in Nyala Park and two in Grantham Park

EMPANGENI residents have been returning home to find water streaming through their yards as copper theft escalates in the suburbs.

Four incidents of copper theft have been reported within a week – two in Nyala Park and two in Grantham Park.

Empangeni CPF Chairperson, Zonita Grobbelaar, said that one house in Nyala Park was targeted twice when the homeowners were away.

It is assumed that the perpetrators had been watching their movements to establish a routine.

‘Sometimes, if homeowners are ‘lucky’, the criminals turn off the water first, but often they just rip the pipes off the walls,’ said Grobbelaar.

‘In one of the incidents in Grantham Park a perpetrator was spotted by the homeowner and fled.

‘Residents should consider getting plastic pipes instead.’
