Campus cleared after student protest action

The college reception office was closed to the public for safety reasons

CALM was promptly restored at the Umfolozi College’s Richtek campus on Monday after students went on the rampage, destroying campus property in retaliation for unpaid National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allowances.

Richards Bay police moved in swiftly and escorted the angry, violently protesting students away from the premises before 10am, but they went on damaging road signs and causing traffic disruptions on Via Richardia by placing tree stumps and rubble across the roads as they walked to the Richards Bay CBD.

The college reception office was closed to the public for safety reasons.

According to Umfolozi College Marketing and Communications Manager, Bhekani Ndlovu, students were unhappy about the delay in receiving their NSFAS allowances. ‘Some learners received their payments over a week ago, but this was not the case with returning and some walk-in students.

‘NSFAS is still capturing these students’ details and a delay was experienced,’ said Ndlovu.

‘Other concerns raised by students was the delay in receiving textbooks, as well as the shortage of staff.

‘All colleges use the same textbooks and there was a delay in distribution.

‘The issue of staff shortages was resolved last week with the Student Representative Council.’
