Medical waste dumped in Empangeni remains a mystery
The matter has been reported to the police as well as local Department of Health officials
MEDICAL supplies found dumped at an Empangeni sugar cane farm last week are not connected to the Department of Health, its hospitals or clinics.
This was revealed by department officials after they inspected the discarded boxes on Monday.
‘They don’t belong to any of our establishments and it’s obvious they were ordered by an individual.
‘All labels indicate the delivery address as a local house, but we don’t know for what purpose.
‘The house has been identified and we referred the matter to the King Cetshwayo District Municipality’s Environmental Health Department ‘ said regional spokesperson Sbongiseni Manqele.
The matter was also reported to police, and while all stakeholders conduct their respective investigations, the KZN Department of Health has also stepped in to get answers.
Dozens of unopened boxes containing medical supplies were found illegally dumped at ZSM Farm.
The boxes contained intravenous infusion sets (IVs), IV administration sets, swabs, syringes, needles, endotracheal tubes and other surgical items.
The supplies have not yet passed their expiration date and according to labels on the boxes, they were supposed to be delivered to an address in Nyala Park.
