Boxes of medical supplies dumped on farm in Empangeni

Farm owner James McIlrath was shocked when he discovered the supplies on two sections of his farm, in the early hours of Tuesday morning

SCORES of unopened boxes containing valuable medical supplies were found illegally dumped at a farm property in Empangeni this week.

Farm owner James McIlrath was shocked when he discovered the supplies on two sections of his farm, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The boxes contained intravenous infusion sets (IVs), IV administration sets, swabs, syringes, needles, endotracheal tubes and other surgical items.

The supplies had not yet passed their expiry date and according to labels on the boxes they were meant to have been delivered to an address in Nyala Park in Empangeni.

‘Someone deliberately dumped all this stuff on my private property, so clearly they wanted to hide them,’ said McIlrath.

‘There is an address and name of a person which these things were supposed to have been delivered to and the Department of Health should investigate because we don’t know if they were meant for a hospital where they could save people’s lives,’ he said.

According to the department, the matter is under investigation and a full report will be produced.

Meanwhile, farm workers removed the supplies to another section to enable them to continue with their work without tampering with what could be evidence.
