No head yet at Giba High School

Two deputy principals are keeping the school functioning after newly appointed principal, MS Mbokazi, who was introduced by the school inspector at the end of the year, failed to turn up after learning that some of the teachers and learners were unhappy about him replacing transferred former principal, Silwayiphi Hlabisa

GIBA High School in the Mnqobokazi area near Hluhluwe is still without a principal owing to an ongoing dispute about who should fill the post.

Two deputy principals are keeping the school functioning after newly appointed principal, MS Mbokazi, who was introduced by the school inspector at the end of the year, failed to turn up after learning that some of the teachers and learners were unhappy about him replacing transferred former principal, Silwayiphi Hlabisa.

Following Hlabisa’s transfer last year, learners mobilised and protested, demanding the Department of Education (DoE) to reinstate him.

The DoE called a meeting last year with the school governing body, inspectors and community leaders to discuss and resolve the issue.

Inkosi Sabelo Ngwane said peace and stability has still not returned at the school, as it was an intricate matter with many parties involved.

He said parents are not happy with the situation and the disruptions it causes school and some wish to remove their children and place them somewhere else.

uMkhanyakude District Director of Education, Mjozi Motha, said he was aware that the new principal had not yet reported for duty.

‘At a meeting on Tuesday no decision was taken about finding a solution, but we are dealing with the matter.

‘We have an open mind listening to all stakeholder suggestions, which will hopefully help us move forward,’said Motha.
