Reading promoted in communities

The community walk, which included learners of Obanjeni Primary School, was held last week, followed by a public pledge drive in Gingindlovu and Mandeni

AHEAD of World Read Aloud Day next week, non-governmental organisation Nal’ibali recently hosted a fun walk and community activation to promote reading.

The community walk, which included learners of Obanjeni Primary School, was held last week, followed by a public pledge drive in Gingindlovu and Mandeni.

‘More than 30 people have pledged to read aloud on 5 February,’ said Nal’ibali King Cetshwayo District literacy  mentor, Sifisesihle Mdunge.

Mdunge said the organisation observes World Read Aloud Day to draw attention to the importance of reading aloud to children, particularly in their mother tongue.

‘We commission a brand-new story and translate it into all 11 official languages before asking adults and caregivers across the country to join us in reading it aloud to children on the same day.

‘In 2019, with the help of our network, partners and the public, we read to 1 559 730 children and in 2020 we aim to break that record and read to two million children,’ said Mdunge.
