25-year-old Jozini murder suspect in court

Ward 5 councillor, Bhenkosi Mahaye, alleges that the gunman went to the victim's home and demanded to speak to his ex-girlfriend

A KWAMSIYANE Reserve murder suspect appeared in the Ubombo Magistrate’s court on Monday, accused of killing his former girlfriend’s mother.

The 25-year-old man is accused of shooting to death Samukeliswe Nyawo (41) with a homemade gun at her home in the Emakhonyeni Reserve last Wednesday night.

She was shot in the stomach and was declared dead at the scene.

Ward 5 councillor, Bhenkosi Mahaye, alleges that the gunman went to the victim’s home and demanded to speak to his ex-girlfriend.

‘Realising that the suspect was armed, the women quickly closed the door, but the suspect allegedly forced open a window, through which he fired a shot at his former girlfriend.

‘According to reports he missed his target and hit Nyawo instead,’ said Mahaye, who claimed it was not the first attack.

‘The two have been together for almost two years and last year in December they broke up.

‘Since the break up the suspect had been sending death threats to his ex-girlfriend,’ said Mahaye

‘As a community leader I am concerned about this incident, because we experienced a similar incident last week and buried two deceased at the weekend.’

Police spokesperson, Captain Senzo Gumede, said the suspect was arrested on Friday and confessed to the killing.’

The man was remanded in police custody until next Monday for a bail application.
