Maths 20% pass rate adjustment, fake news

Social media was ablaze for weeks with rumours of the department lowering the pass requirements from 30 per cent to 20 per cent to allow more pupils from grades seven to nine to pass

THE education department has called out certain news platforms for misleading the public regarding themathematics pass rate being adjusted to 20 per cent.

In a statement, the department dismissed the claims as fake news.

Social media was ablaze for weeks with rumours of the department lowering the pass requirements from 30 per cent to 20 per cent to allow more pupils from grades seven to nine to pass.

The Basic Education Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said that similar rumours were doing the rounds in 2016.

‘The story came up a few years ago and it is not true.

Minister Angie Motshekga made a special concession in 2016 which applied to pupils from grades seven to nine who had passed all their subjects except for mathematics, to still be promoted to the next grade.’

The department urged the public not to trust and engage in misleading content.
