The Zululand Observer website had more than 3,9 million page views this year, and 1,4 million users.

Our busiest day was Tuesday 22 October, recording a whopping 46,971 page views with a story that went viral across South Africa: the Grantleigh artwork controversy.

Our top online stories for the year were:

2. Grantleigh responds to artwork video – 22 October (39,817 page views)

3. Load shedding schedules – 11 February (38,829 page views)

4. Eskom planned power outage for Thursday – 2 October (31,290 page views)

5. Various Empangeni and Richards Bay SPAR stores temporarily shut down – 17 October (29, 476 page views)

Boasting close to 50 000 fans, the ZO Facebook page has seen some dramatic action in the past year. October was our best month, statistic wise.

Here are the five posts that had the biggest reach (between brackets):

1. 163 870: Former Grantleigh learner pens open letter to principal – 23 October.

2. 89 434: A church building has collapsed in Dlangubo on the outskirts of Empangeni, tragically leaving 13 dead – 18 April.

3. 80 226: Various Empangeni and Richards Bay SPAR stores temporarily shut down – 17 October.

4. 71 410: Taxi drivers threaten to blockade the R34 between Empangeni and Nkwalini – 1 December.

5. 55 563: After a 24 hour closure, the affected SPAR stores are slowly being re-opened by the SPAR Group – 18 October.
