Economic development discussed at Unizulu

The engagement session held at the University of Zululand's (Unizulu) Richards Bay campus was organised by the faculty of Commerce, Administration and Law

LOCAL economic development and entrepreneurship formed part of discussions at this year’s Management, Business, Administration and Legal Initiatives (MBALI) conference.

The engagement session held at the University of Zululand’s (Unizulu) Richards Bay campus was organised by the faculty of Commerce, Administration and Law.

‘The conference provided a platform for the faculty to present a niche area project which focuses on local economic development with a strong focus on developing inclusive economy, enterprise development support and governance.

‘This is an inter-disciplinary project that will involve all the departments within the faculty, while some departments in other faculties will also get an opportunity to participate, led by Prof Greyling and Prof Kaseeram,’ Unizulu’s Dr Nokukhanya Jili said.

Faculty Deputy Dean, Prof Irrshad Kaseeram, said the conference provided a platform for postgraduate students and staff to present their research work and engage with knowledgeable researchers in the field.

‘We realised that this is a form of social constructive learning that provides a very quick and efficient means to pick up valuable and complicated skills in a short time,’ said Kaseeram.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), also delivered a presentation on pricing of energy in South Africa and attendees deliberated on various studies around this topic.

This was to provide information to students and staff on how research is conducted outside of universities and to expose career possibilities outside of the academic world.
