Pastor faced with unholy party mess

MEMBERS of the ‘Lede in Christus Kerk’ in Empangeni were met by the sight of alcohol boxes thrown around the church yard when they arrived for Sunday’s service.
The church is located in Fairview, close to the Empangeni swimming pool.
As the municipality and authorities struggle to get a grip on public drinking, the area has become notorious for noisy parties, litter and unruly behaviour.
One of the congregants, Sandra Oosthuizen, said she was appalled when she arrived at church and found their pastor and his wife picking up the rubbish.
‘There were alcohol boxes and litter everywhere and we were expecting congregants from another church to visit us for the day. The sad thing is that this is not the first time this has happened, as around a month ago we had the same problem,’ Oosthuizen said.
The church does not have fencing owing to its close proximity to other property boundaries and the cost involved.
The pastor, who did not want to be named, said this was not the first time he has had to pick up rubbish before starting his service.
‘This has been an ongoing problem for years. On Saturday, the church yard was clean because we hosted a wedding, but when we returned on Sunday the place was in a mess.
‘It is not that we do not want people to braai or enjoy themselves, but we just wish that they would use the bins which are there and clean up after themselves.’
