FOLLOWING years of decay and a forensic investigation into alleged fraud and corruption, the KZN Department of Arts and Culture is making progress towards the completion of the uThungulu Art Centre in Richards Bay.
The department is currently seeking a service provider to finish the structure in Veldenvlei, which had become a a sad sight of dilapidation.
‘The investigation has been completed, and assessment done in July to identify structural defects in the building.
‘The report we received is that the building can be utilised and we have therefore advertised for service providers to finish the building.
‘We will only know how long it will take once the service providers have been appointed,’ said KZN Department of Arts and Culture spokesperson, Phathisa Mfuyo.
The construction of the art centre was halted after the department noted delays in the project.
‘The architect did not provide full survey details on time and failed to coordinate team activities effectively.
‘The same architect also enlisted an engineer who had capacity constraints, delaying the completion of civil and structural designs.
‘The department then relieved the architect and engineer of their duties, recruiting better suited candidates.
‘The planning process was started afresh and a new design approved, the department said.
