IFP Women’s Brigade condemns abuse

ALCOHOL and drug abuse, and the high rate of unemployment, are major causes of domestic violence directed at women and children.
This was the sentiment of IFP Women Brigade’s national secretary Queen Xulu during a 16 Days of Activism campaign at Madoda Community Hall in Macekane Reserve.
Xulu encouraged women to stand together and report all sorts of abuse directed at them and their children to the police.
‘Daily women and children are being attacked, raped and killed. We are here to urge women to unite against
abuse and urge communities to continue with this campaign even after 10 December.‘We are saying to all men, it is now enough. They must respect their families. A man who respects himself can’t
rape and kill his family,’ she said.
She praised the justice system and police for doing sterling work in dealing with abusers.
‘Having said that, we strongly believe that the government has a bigger role to play in educating communities on what to do when reporting cases, because in some cases suspects are released owing to lack of evidence,’ Xulu said.
