A grandmother has been left devastated after discovering that her husband had been having sex with their under aged granddaughter.
The Ngwelezana woman confirmed her suspicions on Saturday when she had her 10-year-old grandchild medically examined after noticing a change in her behaviour.
It was determined that the child’s grandfather had raped her. Police confirmed that the 62-year-old man was arrested and charged.
Violence against women and children continues to increase in areas around Empangeni, with three reported cases last weekend alone.
Among the victims were a two-year-old toddler and a 10-year-old child, who were allegedly raped by their neighbours in Nseleni.
The rise in rape cases has been of national concern as law enforcers struggle to arrest and prosecute suspects.
Two weeks ago the ZO reported that 43 victims of sexual abuse had to wait over a year for their cases to be heard in court owing to internal turmoil which saw the Empangeni sexual offences court closed since April last year.
Nationally, police recorded 41 583 rapes in 2018/19, which indicated that about 114 women or children are raped every day in South Africa.
