eShowe garage robbers sentenced

The sentencing follows an incident on 5 January 2016 when four suspects entered the eShowe Sasol Garage and confronted the security guard

TWO men accused of armed robbery with aggravating circumstances, Thobani Trevor Mthembu (31) and Kwenzakwakhe Christopher Mngomezulu (36), were found guilty in the Ulundi Regional Court and received sentences of 12 years and eight years imprisonment respectively.

The sentencing follows an incident on 5 January 2016 when four suspects entered the eShowe Sasol Garage and confronted the security guard.

They demanded money from the cashiers, taking an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes and robbed the cashiers of their cellphones.

They fled the scene in a getaway vehicle waiting outside the garage.

The docket was assigned to W/O Pottier for investigation, and with the help of the CCTV footage, four suspects between the ages of 16 and 36 were arrested a few days later.

They appeared in the eShowe Magistrate’s Court and W/O Pottier opposed bail.

The other two accused are already serving their sentences as they pleaded guilty and were sentenced in the Inkanyezi Regional Court in eShowe in July, 2016.

The minor, Falakhe Zungu, who was 16 years old at the time, was sentenced to four years imprisonment and is serving his sentence at Ekuseni Juvenile Prison in Newcastle.

The fourth accused, Lindokuhle Khoza (19) was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, of which two years were suspended on condition that the accused is not found guilty of the same offence for a period of five years.
