No mercy shown for Kwambo house of God
Church leader, Sphamandla Dlomo, said he received the disturbing news last Tuesday afternoon. He said it was unacceptable for authorities to demolish a house of God without consulting with church leaders
CONGREGANTS of the Jabulani Gospel Church in KwaMbonambi have no place to worship after their church building was demolished last week by a private contractor erecting government RDP houses in the Slovo settlement.
Church leader, Sphamandla Dlomo, said he received the disturbing news last Tuesday afternoon. He said it was unacceptable for authorities to demolish a house of God without consulting with church leaders.
‘When I went there to investigate, I found the contractor laying foundations for the RDP houses.
‘The church was established in 1997 by my father, Harry Dlomo. Since then we have helped thousands of local residents with food parcels and clothing.
‘We were shocked to learn about the demolition. In addition, our church belongings such as chairs, tables and other material had gone missing.
‘The church is poor and we cannot ask congregants to contribute money to rebuild our church at an alternative site.
‘And we can’t even fight this in court as we don’t have money. We will appreciate it if the municipality can intervene and provide us with another site,’ said Dlomo.
uMfolozi Municipality Communications Manager, Philani Khumalo, said the contractor did inform the church leaders about the project.
‘The church structure was erected in an area reserved for RDP houses and church leaders were informed in advance about the demolition.
‘We invite the church leaders to visit us. We will link them up with our planning department to see whether another site can be allocated for church purposes,’ he said.
