Port statistics for October

WITH more than 18,8 million tons of cargo handled across the country’s ports last month, Richards Bay recorded 8,7 million tons.
This is an increase from the 7,5 million tons of cargo handled in August and the 6.8 million tons recorded in July.
Of the total cargo handled, 8,5 million tons was break bulk and 171 650 tons liquid bulk.
The port recorded handling of 813 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers, 277 of which landed on our shores and 536 shipped out.
Of the 166 vessel arrivals with a gross tonnage of 6,667 million, twenty-three were for chemicals, liquefied petroleum gas and oil.
Richards Bay has the largest dry bulk terminal in the country and handles approximately 54% of total dry bulk cargo.
According to Transnet’s financial results for the six months ended 30 September, Richards Bay’s dry bulk terminal’s loading rate improved from 823 tons per hour to 864 tons.
The off-loading rate improved from 416 tons per hour to 434 tons per hour.
