Family demands justice over death of daughter

Asanda Sangweni was knocked down by a car while walking on the roadside on Monday, 7 October

THE Buthelezi family of Dumisani Makhaye Village wants to see justice being done following the death of their 13-year-old daughter.

Asanda Sangweni was knocked down by a car while walking on the roadside on Monday, 7 October.

She was admitted to Ngwelezana Hospital and passed away on Wednesday, 6 November after spending a month in the Intensive Care Unit as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.

Family spokesperson, Mabuyi Buthelezi, said her niece was dragged by the vehicle for a few metres.

‘Every bone in her body was fractured. One of her legs was amputated while she was in ICU.

‘What disturbs us most is that the police are not doing anything to arrest the driver.

‘The investigating officer has failed to take a statement from the people who witnessed the accident.

‘The deceased was walking on the opposite side of the road when the accident occurred.

‘The driver lost control and drove across the road and knocked down my niece, who was far from the road,’ she said.

Buthelezi said Asanda had a bright future and was doing Grade 7 at Wood and Raw Primary School.

‘As a family we were expecting the driver would come to us to explain what led to this accident. That in itself would have consoled us.

‘We want the driver to pay for this. The law must take its course,’ said Buthelezi.

King Cetshwayo Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, said a case of reckless driving has been changed to a culpable homicide charge after the death of the victim.

‘Our investigating officer is still busy with this matter. Once it has been concluded, the docket will be handed over to the Public Prosecutor to decide whether the driver should be prosecuted or not,’ said Mdlalose.
