City impounds stray cattle

THE uMhlathuze Municipality is continuing with its clampdown on stray cattle, and last week impounded cattle roaming in public areas and roads.
Four cows left unattended were rounded up near the Brackenham Community Hall on Wednesday, and another four on Saturday from streets in the suburb before being transported to the pound in eShowe.
City of uMhlathuze Chief Traffic Officer, Mbongiseni Ndlovu, confirmed that 16 cattle were impounded over the last two weeks in separate incidents.
While the city engaged in intensive awareness and public participation campaigns during the integrated development plan workshops and roadshows to, among others, create awareness before implementing the impounding of stray animals roaming in public areas and on roads, owners continue to leave their cattle unattended to wander.

Ndlovu confirmed that owners will be fined R800 per cow and animals will be kept for seven days before being auctioned off.
‘There are transport costs, impound fees per day and medical costs for sick animals.
‘We have noted that owners respond very quickly to claim their animals.
‘The cattle are not allowed to be left unattended.
‘The impounding of animals began in June and we are warning cattle owners that we will continue to enforce the law,’ said Ndlovu.
The community has welcomed the seizure of cattle roaming in the Brackenham suburb and commended the municipality for taking action.
The number of cattle roaming in the suburb has decreased significantly and the kraals that were erected near residential areas have been demolished.
