Brain matter mystery possibly solved

Reserve residents were woken by gunshots on Tuesday night, but were afraid to inspect the area until the next morning, when they found the partial remains

POLICE believe they may have discovered the body linked to the mysterious brain matter and bullet cartridges that were discovered in the Ubizo Reserve, outside Empangeni on Wednesday.

Reserve residents were woken by gunshots on Tuesday night, but were afraid to inspect the area until the next morning, when they found the partial remains.

At the time, police told the ZO they could not have been sure whether the matter and blood belonged to an animal or to a human since there was no trace of a body. Umhlali K9 Unit also spent the day searching the area but no evidence was found and no locals were reported missing.

However, according to a source close to the investigation, Empangeni SAPS were alerted on Thursday about a man’s body found in an abandoned bakkie in Ndomwanwe, near Ntambanana.

‘The circumstances around the bakkie itself were suspicious because it was reported missing twice – once in 2017 and again last year.

‘The deceased was found by community members in the back of the vehicle with the bakkie cover over him.

‘He was shot three times in the head, neck and chest, which could be linked to the three bullet cartridges found at Ubizo Reserve.’

Police are currently awaiting results from the fingerprints, ballistics and DNA tests. The identity of the victim is still unknown.
