Electricity system severely constrained

Unplanned breakdowns are currently above the critical threshold of 9 500MW, which necessitated the extensive use of emergency resources (water and diesel) in order to meet demand

THE electricity system will remain constrained and vulnerable until Thursday this week owing to an unexpected loss of some generation units over the past weekend.

This was announced by power utility Eskom on Tuesday.

‘Load-shedding, however, is not expected.

‘The system remains vulnerable to a number of variables owing to historic factors such as inadequate maintenance, as well as ageing of the plant,’ Eskom said in a statement.

‘The unexpected loss of additional units may result in load-shedding at short notice.

‘Unplanned breakdowns are currently above the critical threshold of 9 500MW, which necessitated the extensive use of emergency resources (water and diesel) in order to meet demand.’

They have appealed to residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly to manage the electricity system back to stability.

‘Please switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand,’ Eskom said.
