Bonsai feast not to be missed
The workshop is hosted by the Zululand Bonsai Society and is set to take place on 9 and 10 November at the NSRI base in Meerensee
SAVE the date for the upcoming bonsai feast in the Bay as experts from Durban are booked to treat local bonsai artists to their expertise.
The workshop is hosted by the Zululand Bonsai Society and is set to take place on 9 and 10 November at the NSRI base in Meerensee.
Shaun Murphy (the Fig King) and Neil Holley will take centre stage at the event, and pass on their wealth of knowledge of a wide range of bonsai techniques on various tree species, including the fig, kanniedood and Hluhluwe creeper.
Murphy, known in the bonsai world as Mr Miyagi, became interested in bonsai way back in 1975.
With a passion for fig trees, and the Natal wild fig in particular, Shaun has travelled the country extensively, demonstrating at bonsai conventions.
Holley joined the Durban Bonsai Society in 2003 and has since attended conventions in Zululand as well as the Eastern and Western Cape.
With a zeal for going on digs, Neil says most of his trees are collected in the wild and, as a result, they sport unusual growth patterns.
The public are welcome and encouraged to attend, and will learn about grafting, styling and design, tools of the trade, including why the Dremel as a carving tool and wire are so important in every bonsai collection.
Carving and wiring will be demonstrated, as well as basic care for bonsai trees.
To book a place on the upcoming workshop, contact the Zululand Bonsai Society’s treasurer Ronnie Gericke on 083 4272213.
For catering purposes, bookings must be made by 6 November.
