ANC basks in Ward 9 by-election victory
The City of uMhlathuze ward seat became vacant after the resignation of councillor Erwin Palmer

THE African National Congress candidate, Mandla Mdaka easily emerged victorious in what was billed to be a hotly-contested Ward 9 by-election held on Wednesday last week.
The City of uMhlathuze ward seat became vacant after the resignation of councillor Erwin Palmer.
Mdaka received 1 007 votes, IFP candidate Zonita Grobbelaar garnered 551votes, Gugu Ntombela of the DA obtained 326 votes, independent candidate Bonginkosi Majola received 112 votes while the EFF’s Thobisile Sung only gained 23 votes.
ANC Regional Secretary, Tholi Gwala, said they welcomed the outcome of the by-election with great humility.
‘This clearly communicates that community members in this ward still believe in the ANC.
‘This clear and decisive win sends an unapologetic message from all supporters of the ANC on where their beliefs lie.
‘We further congratulate all ANC volunteers and supporters for this overwhelming success.
‘The unadorned truth conveyed by these results, is that the ANC continues to be the only trusted organisation for the people. The centrality of the ANC in the cause of our people is undeniable,’ he said.
‘We accept this victory with pride as consistent with our long held view that recognises the honour in serving our people.
‘As revolutionaries we have a sacred responsibility to place, first and foremost, the aspirations of our people at the top of our social transformation agenda.
‘This is certainly the state of mind that our newly elected ANC Cllr Mandla Mdaka will uphold and give credence to as he joins the rest of our comrades deployed at the City of uMhlathuze,’ said Gwala.
