THE Veldenvlei Squash Club is targeted on a weekly basis by burglars and stripped of its copper piping, electrical connections and kitchen and bathroom fittings.
From being targeted on a monthly basis, the club is now hit every week, with Chairperson Daniel Motzouris confirming the most recent incident last week when kitchen sinks, taps and fittings were stripped and stolen.
While the club has lost thousands, membership fees and donations from local businesses and individuals have helped the club weather the storm and cover the repair costs.

‘But the ongoing theft and vandalism are seriously depleting our funds.
‘In January our main electrical supply box was stolen and constant thefts of shower basins, shower heads, taps, sinks and copper piping and damages to the roof and ceiling every time burglars gain entry, have had a serious impact,’ said Motzouris.
‘Our alarm system was also ripped out and despite beefing up our security measures, criminals continue to strike.

‘Local security company Mecca has offered to sponsor security improvements and we are grateful to all the businesses for their support.
‘All our equipment for our youth and school development programme was also stolen.
‘We rely on our membership fees to cover the general running cost and maintenance.
‘Fortunately, sponsorships helped pay for our losses, which run into at least R100 000 this year.’
