Prisoner escapes from moving police van
Zululand Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said the incident occurred in Mondlo, near the Grace area
BABANANGO police are looking for awaiting trial prisoner Mjabuliseni Nhlengethwa, who escaped from custody on Tuesday.
Nhlengethwa managed to get out of his handcuffs, cut out a window burglar guard and opened the police van’s rear door latches before jumping out of the moving vehicle.
Zululand Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said the incident occurred in Mondlo, near the Grace area.
‘Two officers were transporting two awaiting trial prisoners from Babanango to Ncome Prison, when Nhlengwethwa managed to escape.
‘The officers only noticed the escape when the remaining prisoner banged the cabin to get their attention.
‘When the officers stopped, they spotted Nhlengethwa running in the distance and gave chase, but he disappeared.
‘A saw blade was found in the back of the police van. We will launch an internal investigation and further steps will be taken should it be determined that the fugitive was assisted in his escape,’ said Gwala.
Nhlengethwa was arrested for two rape cases in Babanango and Nondweni.
