Water warning for eShowe
King Cetshwayo District Municipality has called on eShowe residents to use water even more sparingly as the drought hits deeper, causing serious supply issues
THE King Cetshwayo District Municipality has called on eShowe residents to use water even more sparingly as the drought hits deeper, causing serious supply issues.
‘In recent months we have experienced minimal rainfall in eShowe, and the water demand from communities under the Phobane supply source, including nearby rural areas, has forced us to utilise water sources from the Ehlazi and Rutledge Park dams,’ said King Cetshwayo Municipal Manager, Mbali Ndlovu.
‘These dam levels have also gradually dropped over the past months owing to the increased usage.
‘If the situation continues, we may be forced to introduce water restriction measures to preserve the available water sources.’
The restrictions will involve the issuing of notices to consumers as follows:
• No irrigation of gardens;
• No washing of vehicles by means of hosepipes;
• No filling or topping up of swimming pools;
• No cleaning of surfaces requiring high volumes of water, e.g. rooftops.
‘Secondly, the introduction of load-shedding by Eskom last week affected the operations of the pump stations, which rely on electricity for reticulation,’ said Ndlovu.
‘We therefore could not guarantee a normal supply as load-shedding affected the operations of our facilities, including plants and pump stations, and we were unable to fill up the reservoirs in time, hence delaying the supply to the communities we serve.
‘Should load-shedding persist in the weeks to come, it will continue to affect the operations of the pump stations.’
