Ongoye pupil excels at Eskom Expo International Science Fair

The purpose of the competition is to stimulate innovative scientific and engineering projects aimed at solving issues experienced in participants' communities

ONGOYE High School Grade 12 pupil Pinky Jiyane has made a name for herself and her school by becoming the Siemens grand prize winner at the recent Eskom Expo International Science Fair held in Boksburg.

The purpose of the competition is to stimulate innovative scientific and engineering projects aimed at solving issues experienced in participants’ communities.

As reward for her effort, Jiyane will attend a three-and-a-half-year international technical apprenticeship at Siemens in Berlin, Germany.

Speaking at a special event held at the school last Wednesday to congratulate Jiyane, Education District Director, Dr David Chonco, said Jiyane’s achievement has put the district and KZN on the international map.

‘We are happy that young people are making use of the opportunities at their disposal.

‘We need to produce more Pinky Jiyanes in this district,’ said Chonco.

King Cetshwayo District Mayor, Nonhle Mkhulisi, urged Jiyane to remain focused on her studies, saying the sky is the limit.

Jiyane said her project aimed to introduce a new way of loading electricity.

‘I never thought I would achieve something like this.

‘I wish to praise my teachers who helped me a lot, especially my mentor, Senzo Manzi, and teacher Mr Khumalo. I would not have been here without them,’ she said.
