Big break for Richards Bay performer

STAGING a gripping performance at the International ARTS Talent Showcase (IATS) event in Johannesburg last weekend, secured Richards Bay’s Megan Reddy a spot to perform at next year’s International Models and Talent (IMTA) showpiece in America.
The 23-year old Aquadene resident joined aspiring actors, singers, dancers and models from across the country and Namibia at the two-day event auditions before international talent scout Joey Hunter and IMTA casting director of Tyler Perry Studios, Rhavynn Drummer.
Passionate about the performing arts from a young age, Megan fine-tuned her talent at Betesda Independent School.
‘I do not have a professional background in the performing arts, but I have participated in local gospel concerts and performed dance, song, modelling and poetry items.

‘Growing up I would always memorise monologues from movies and impersonate and imitate different characters.
‘I spent most of my days making my parents laugh with my performances and they always encouraged me to pursue my passion for acting.
‘Last year I heard the IATS advertisement on radio, but because of work pressures I was not able to attend the 2018 auditions,’ Megan said.
Currently unemployed, she began the process of preparing for the auditions. She completed the first leg of auditions in Durban in August before qualifying for last week’s Johannesburg auditions.
She performed monologues from the movies Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Four Colored Girls.
During the auditions she met the casting director of X Factor, Nate Butler, Blaze Johnson from The Voice America and a host of other leading industry experts.
‘I have learned how to embrace my stage fright and channel it into emotions. This journey has also taught me that nothing good in life comes easy. The harder you work, the more you reap.’
She needs to raise R76 000 to cover the expenses of the trip to America in July next year, and will be hosting fund-raising drives to rally support.
Her future goals are to pursue studies in the acting industry and apply for scholarships in the performing arts.
