Art ace works magic with junk

John Ross College art pupils scores 100% for Visual Art examination

JOHN Ross College matriculant Adele Chetty scored a phenomenal 100% for Visual Arts and is excited about pursuing studies in fashion design.

The 19-year-old also received distinctions for Business Studies and Life Orientation.
In an interview with the Zululand Observer, Chetty said she expected a distinction for art but was surprised by the full marks.
The school’s Visual Art Award recipient described her skill as a God-given talent and said she finds it effortless to express her emotions and thoughts through artwork.

Leading up to the final examination, she worked consistently on assignments, projects and exams using her love for fashion as her main source of inspiration.
And the excellent results have sealed her opportunity to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer.
For her final examination practical, she created a plastic and paper cocktail dress incorporating fashion trends from different eras, using recycled materials such as bubble wrap, plastic, tissue paper, bottle caps and newspaper.
‘Being able to incorporate fashion into my work was a pleasure; I enjoy adding my own take on fashion and creating designs from recycled materials.

‘I tried to stray from art for a while, but it always reeled me back because it was the one subject which kept me excited,” said Chetty.
‘Art comes naturally to me and while some tasks were time-consuming I always managed to complete them with ease.
‘My mother is a seamstress and has helped harness my sewing skills; now I can create my own fashion pieces from start to finish.’
She boasts a collection of fashion inspired necklaces and cocktail dresses created using different recycled materials.
