THE DA is to call for the intervention of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC Sipho Hlomuka into the affairs of the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality.
DA councillor Victor Phoswa said his party was preparing to write a letter to Hlomuka, requesting that he directly intervenes in the municipality as provided for under Section 139(1)a of the Constitution, following what he described as ‘the ongoing leadership crisis’ under Mayor Patricia Mncwabe.
The municipality experienced a series of service delivery protests last month, with residents accusing Mncwabe’s administration of poor infrastructure maintenance, sporadic social services and heightened corruption.
‘There is also no communication about the long overdue housing projects and the rehabilitation of the deteriorating road and economic infrastructure,’ said Phoswa.
‘Economic development is being compromised and the tourism sector disrupted, which contributes to the growing unemployment problem.
‘The ANC removed the eThekwini mayor and it must also remove Mayor Mncwabe, because she has failed in her duties.’
