Education remains the cornerstone of success. Talent alone is not enough if is not accompanied with educational qualifications.
In an interview with the Zululand Observer, uMfolozi Mayor Simangaliso Mgenge said he was dismayed to see so many talented soccer players and other sport personalities, who after rising to stardom, end up joining the unemployment queues.
‘We have seen many soccer players whose illustrious career was short-lived owing to injury or other circumstances becoming unemployed because they had nothing else to do other than playing soccer.
‘A case in point is the life of Zululand’s own soccer legend, Siyabonga Sangweni, whom we honoured during Youth Month.
‘Through events we raise funds and support him every year with about R100 000.
‘We have pleaded with him on numerous occasion to enroll at a tertiary institution so that he can have something to fall back on.
‘We are prepared to fund his education, but he is not taking up the offer.
‘The idea was that after completing his studies, we were going to employ him at the municipality. We can’t, however, employ someone who has no qualifications.’
