KWAMBONAMBI police are investigating a case of murder after an 87-year-old woman was found dead in her bed.
The deceased, Nondeleni Zondo of Mankwathini Reserve in Mbonambi, was found by her grandson on Monday morning.
Ward 3 Cllr Nomusa Madonsela said the suspect entered the house through the window, which was found wide open.
‘We are saddened by this incident. We used to only hear about these attacks on elderly people through the media but now this has happened for the first time in our area.
‘The family depended on her old age grant to put food on the table, now the breadwinner is gone.
‘It looks like she was raped before being killed. There were blood stains on her body and some black marks around her neck, which looks like she was strangled to death,’ she said.
She said nothing was stolen from the deceased’s house and her money was found in her wallet.
Police spokesperson, Captain Nkosingiphile Mthethwa, said a case of murder was registered at KwaMbonambi SAPS for investigation.
‘We are waiting for postmortem results to give us a clear understanding on what transpired,’ she said.
