YOUNG women should at all times strive to make education fashionable while maintaining their virginity.

This message of Nkandla Mayor, Thamisanqa Ntuli.
He was addressing young Nkandla women who are preparing to join the thousands of maidens for this year’s annual reed dance (Umkhosi womhlanga) at the Royal Palace on 8 September.
‘We must push for a generation of young independent women who will do things for themselves and become financially independent,’ he said.
Ntuli also praised King Goodwill Zwelithini for reviving the reed dance in 1984.
Ntuli said the municipality would ensure the safety of the maidens.
‘All the buses transporting the girls will be thoroughly inspected. Those found to be unroadworthy will not be allowed to transport the maidens.
‘Drivers will also be checked to ensure they are not under the influence of alcohol,’ he said.
The event was attended by the head of Mahlayizeni Traditional Authority, iNkosi Bhekizwe Biyela.
