Mourners charged for discharging firearms

POLICE have arrested four funeral mourners for discharging firearms in public on Sunday.

The four men attended the funeral service of a taxi owner who was gunned down at a taxi rank in Bhamshela, Ndwedwe.

Ilembe Cluster and Public Order police deployed in the area to monitor proceedings at an event at the Mthuli sport ground, heard gunshots and responded.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, said three suspects aged between 24 and 44 were charged for discharging their firearms in public and their weapons seized.

A 30-year-old fourth suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

All firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in any crime.
