The KZN Executive Council has welcomed the appointment of provincial police commissioner, Lt General KE Jula, who replaced Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Jula was officially introduced during the sitting of KZN Executive Council (Exco) in Pietermaritzburg last week.
KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala said he hoped the move will improve policing and create a safer province.
Zikalala called on the South African Police Services to design a turnaround strategy against crime in the province.
‘According to reports, there is an increase in contact crime in KZN, with murder rising by 16.1 per cent since 2018. It also pointed out that sexual offences have increased sharply by 15.2 per cent.
According to Zikalala the hot spots for murder include Umlazi, Inanda, Plessislaer, KwaMashu, KwaDukuza and Cato Manor.
‘One of the strategies to address this spike in crime will be for police to become more service oriented.
‘While we welcome the report, police should look at issues that undermine policing and make recommendations on what needs to be done,’ said Zikalala.
